We’ve been fortunate enough to come into a limited number of these — the real deal! No joke! Straight from the indigenous markets of Cusco, Peru, where Abby is working on her latest book and a few other textile projects! She hasn’t been able to get any of these for over 5 years — until now. We also don’t know when we’ll be able to get them next.

They come in three sizes:

– small (weighing 8-15 grams) are ideal for spinning fine yarns.
– medium (weighing 16-30 grams) are a good all-around, suited for spinning and plying.
– large (weighing 31-50 grams), suited for spinning thicker yarns or for plying mass quantities.

Featuring hand-turned balsa whorls and hand-carved shafts of varied Andean woods, these are the workhorse spindles used by Andean spinners in producing some of the finest textiles the world has ever known, in an unbroken tradition going back thousands of years.

Miniature llama not included. Maybe if we’re lucky we’ll have those at DFW Fiber Fest — you’re going, right?
